Abstract: The purpose of this thesis is to introduce the reader to ongoing research regarding software agents, and present the personal contributions of the author to the development of a new agent developing framework (ADF). These contributions are focused in the area of agent communication, but also in redefining the overall architecture of ADF in order to make it withstand the challenges of the future. We will investigate the architectural issues involved and present a reference implementation of the framework based on Java 2 Enterprise Edition. We will also examine in great detail the current technologies that would make such an effort possible, and also analyze what the near future has to offer.
